Located in the heart of northern Italy, wine lake garda is surrounded by vineyards that are home to some of the country’s most classic wines. From Bardolino’s light reds to Amarone’s rich passito, these wines are a delight for all the senses.
In addition to the well-known reds of Valpolicella, there are also many other local reds and whites that can be found along the shores of Lake Garda. The presence of the vine has been documented on the hills surrounding the lake since the Bronze Age thanks to grape seeds that were found in prehistoric sites like Peschiera, Pacengo, Cisano, and Desenzano. The production of wine and olive oil continued in the Middle Ages in the rural villas and monasteries that rose around Lake Garda.
The region has been given special recognition in the form of DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), which means that these wines are subject to strict disciplinary controls. Garda Colli Mantovani DOC is produced between the provinces of Verona, Brescia, and Mantua, along the eastern shores of the lake; the Lugana DOC straddles both Lombardy and Veneto on the south shore of the lake, producing wines from Turbiana (Trebbiano di Soave) grapes; and finally, in the west, the Casteller DOC is driven by the indigenous Groppello grape.
There are numerous prestigious wineries in the area, including Cavalchina which pioneered the use of the name ‘Custoza’ for the white wine it produces in this region.
