cybersecurity connecticut is the state’s response to increasing threats to technology and confidential information. From safeguarding top-secret plans for nuclear submarines to protecting voting systems and limiting foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election, Connecticut is leading the way in combatting cybercrime. The state’s resource page includes recommendations and best practices for officials, private organizations, and individuals. In addition, the University of New Haven’s Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) chapter is dedicated to encouraging more women to enter this growing field.
A new law in Connecticut offers incentives to companies that voluntarily increase their cybersecurity protocols. The law allows businesses to qualify for safe harbor protection from punitive damages if they use widely recognized standards of cybersecurity excellence such as NIST or CIS controls. The law takes effect Oct. 1, 2021.
In May of 2023, the New Haven Public School system was the victim of a cyber-attack that cost the school district $6 million in stolen funds and caused damage to its systems. The attack was one of several that compromised the data and financial information of thousands of people.
In an effort to reduce the risk of similar attacks, the state has been working with its partners in the defense and financial industries to encourage the development of more cybersecurity professionals. Many schools in Connecticut offer programs from associate degrees to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Programs focus on developing skills to identify vulnerabilities and protect against malicious cyber activity.
